organisation profile
The Finnish Institute of Marine Research (FIMR) is a research institute which is governed by the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications. FIMR was founded in 1918 to produce information relating to the marine sciences for use in decision making, for practical needs and for use by private citizens alike.
FIMR carries out research in the fields of physical, biological and chemical oceanography. The main research objects are the Baltic Sea and other polar seas. The institute offers operative ice, water level, wave and algal bloom information services and participates actively in environmental monitoring.
Regular marine observations were started in Finland already in the late 19th century with ice observations, tide gauge measurements and hydrographical cruises. Nowadays observations are made on numerous fields in marine research. The institute operates the research vessel Aranda.
Since 1960 the Institute is a designated national agency (DNA) in the IODE system of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. It is a founding member of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and the Baltic Environment Protection Commission (Helsinki Commission). The institute is the testing laboratory T040 of the Finnish Accreditation Service (FINAS), accreditated according to the standard EN ISO/IEC 17025. The quality system includes hydrographic and nutrient sampling and parameters, CTD observations, biological sampling and analyses and analyses of metals and oil. From January 2009 onwards, the FIMR has ceased to exist. Its activities have been taken over by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
