organisation profile

The Department of Systems Ecology at Stockholms University conducts ecological research and teaching, with an emphasis on marine ecosystems and especially the Baltic Sea. It also does research in developing countries and the Tropics. Scientists view humans as an integral component of ecosystems. We apply a systems perspective to ecosystems, their use by humans, and management of their natural resources. The Marine Ecosystem Modeling Group at this Department has implemented the Baltic Ecosystem Database - BED - that was initiated in 1990 as part of a research project 'Large-scale Environmental Effects and Ecological Processes in the Baltic Sea' financed by the Swedish Environmental Agency (for details see Wulff & Rahm, 1990).

The basic idea has been to make available data set on the conditions in the Baltic Sea and on forcing functions so that budget and models of the physics and biogeochemical cycles of organic matter and nutrients can be developed. Tools for accessing BED via Internet, perform calculations and visualization of data have been developed, DAS, SwingStations and NetStations and the latest Nest - an information environment for decision support system. BED includes mainly data on the hydrography and nutrients in the Baltic Sea. This dataset is the result of the kind contribution of several groups and Institutes carrying on research on the Baltic Sea. All historical data up to 1996 are accessible with exception of later years that are restricted. In this case users shall contact the scientists who provided the data.
