- The Natural History Centre of Kópavogur was opened in December 1983. The role of the Icelandic Institute of Natural History is to collect, preserve and display natural artifacts, conduct education and research in natural sciences, and promote nature and environmental protection. Árni Waag was appointed as the first director of the firm and held that position until 1992 when Hilmar J. Malmquist took over. Hilmar held this position until 2014, but the current director is Finnur Ingimarsson.
