organisation profile
The Marine Research Institute (MRI), established in 1965, is a government institute under the auspices of the Ministry of Fisheries. MRI conducts various marine research and provides the Ministry with scientific advice based on its research on marine resources and the environment. The MRI is the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) for Iceland. The three main areas of activities of the MRI are:
- to conduct research on the marine environment around Iceland and its living resources;
- to provide advice to the government on catch levels and conservation measures;
- to inform the government, the fishery sector and the public about the sea and its living resources.
The research activities at the MRI are organised into three main research sections:
- The Marine Environment Section which deals with environmental conditions in the sea, marine geology, and the ecology of algae, zooplankton, fish larvae, fish juveniles, and benthos.
- The Resources Section which deals with investigations on the exploited stocks of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and marine mammals. The major part of the work involves estimating stock sizes and the total allowable catch (TAC) for each stock.
- The Fisheries Advisory Section scrutinises stock assessments and prepares the formal advice on TAC's and sustainable fishing strategies for the government.
The MRI cooperates with many foreign institutes and international organisations, participating in the work of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the Interngovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The MRI is also represented in several other organisations, such as the Northeast Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEFAC), the North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO), and the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Council (NAMMCO).
On July 1, 2016 the Marine Research Institute has merged with the Institute of Freshwater Fisheries (founded in 1946) to become the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute.
