The Institute of Inland Waters is organized into two departments, the Department of Environmental Research and the Department of Fisheries Development.
The Department of Environmental Research contributes to the water management, development and implementation of major environmental plans, environmental quality analysis and impact assessment, protection actions and regulatory measures, design of control and mitigation measures on catchment's or river basin's scale. The department has expertise on conventional and automatic aquatic monitoring, water pollution, integrated ecological and environmental planning, ecological monitoring and field research, water management, protection-conservation actions and restoration practices, design of data bases, laboratory analyses etc.
The Department of Fisheries Development contributes to the freshwater fish research. It evaluates and monitors the status of freshwater fish resources, impact of aquatic environmental alterations on stocks, biodiversity and endemic species. Its main research activities include the biology and ecology of freshwater fish, evaluation of fish habitats and management planning.
The two departments of the Institute collaborate to a better understanding of the functioning of the freshwater ecosystems, while most research programs embrace an interdisciplinary approach and are carried out through a collaboration with other Institutes of NCMR, Research Centres, Universities, Local Authorities and Private Companies.
