organisation profile

The Department of Geography was founded in 1909 with Percy Maude Roxby as the lecturer in charge.  The department subsequently became, in 1917, the first Honours School of Geography in the British Isles.  In the same year Roxby was appointed as the John Rankin Professor of Geography, the first Chair of Geography in the country to bear the name of its benefactor, a local ship-owner and supporter of the University.  Today the department hosts around four hundred students and over twenty-seven research-active staff, supporting eleven BA and BSc Honours degree programmes in which Geography is taken as either the core subject or combined with subjects like Earth Sciences, Biology, Archaeology, Management and International Development. Seven taught masters’ courses and a range of PhD topics support a buoyant postgraduate population of around fifty

The research tradition within the department is exceptionally strong, with numerous examples of pioneering studies, key publications and cutting-edge research with high international recognition. Today, research activities in the Department are focused in several areas: Environmental Change; Environmental Analysis; Globalisation and Development; and Population Studies

The Department has a strong record of research backed by external funding amounting to £2.5m since 2001.

There are five research groups, each of which is involved in cutting edge enquiry. The Department is actively engaged in interdisciplinary research in collaboration with a range of other subject areas.
