ITM is multidisciplinary in its research and teaching, with a focus on society's impact on natural systems and processes.
The research and teaching encompass the transport, fate and biological effects of environmental pollutants and trace substances, including the development and use of chemical, biological and physical methods as well as numerical models. ITM also provides external expert support to Swedish environmental authorities.
Since July, 1998, ITM is located in well-designed, functional and modern laboratories, on the Stockholm University campus at Frescati. ITM also has several field stations both in Sweden and abroad. One is in Studsvik, 100 km south of Stockholm, where research using brackish water from the Baltic Sea is carried out. Another is an air monitoring field station located at Aspvreten, near Studsvik.
