organisation profile

Geology has been taught at Aberdeen University for more than 150 years and geology degrees have been awarded from 1892 onwards. Today the Department of Geology & Petroleum Geology at the University of Aberdeen is a recognised centre for excellence in petroleum geology research and training. We currently have 18 full time and part-time academic staff members. We also have a large body of honorary staff who contribute particularly through providing additional expertise to help PhD students. Our student numbers continue to grow in contrast to the UK-wide trend of declining geology student numbers. We graduate around 35 - 40 students each year. Between 20 - 25 students study for the MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience and 10 - 15 on the MSc in Oil and Gas Enterprise Management. The department has an international reputation for educational training, with many of our former graduates in prominent positions in academia, industry and government world-wide. Our BSc, MSc and PhD student employment record is one of the best in the UK. Research in the department is focused on many aspects of geology ranging from micropalaeontology to planetary exploration. We have turned our geographical position at the centre of the European Oil Industry to good account by developing close research ties with the international oil industry. Today more than 80% of our research funding is industry generated. The modern department is a vibrant department, constantly adapting and evolving, with the determination to make it's mark through research and training well into the third millennium.
