organisation profile
The main research area of TKK/AVA is remote sensing, where the emphasis is on:
- construction of airborne microwave sensors,
- operation of research aircraft Shorts SC-7 Skyvan owned by the laboratory,
- airborne measurements conducted using both microwave and optical sensors,
- development of geophysical applications using airborne and spaceborne data.
The main geophysical applications are forest inventory, snow and sea ice mapping, water quality monitoring and atmospheric research.
Recently, construction of an airborne L-band (1.4 GHz) synthetic aperture radiometer (concept very similar to ESAs SMOS) was finished.
EO-sensors used in the research: helicopter-borne C- and X-band scatterometer, airborne 14-channel non-imaging radiometer system (frequencies equivalent to AMSR), airborne optical spectrometer, airborne SAR (EMISAR and ESAR); ENVISAT ASAR and MERIS, RADARSAT-1, MODIS, AMSR, SSM/I, QuickSCAT.
