Department of Marine Systems at Tallinn University of Technology was founded in the beginning of 2002 and launched on June 1, 2002. The main areas of scientific research are: 

  • Baltic Sea water and material exchange processes and their impact on Estonian coastal waters
  • Dynamics of turbulent processes and nonlinear waves
  • Estimation of ecological conditions of Estonian coastal waters and lakes by optical methods

Current applications are:

  • hydrophysical monitoring of marine environment
  • operational monitoring system along Tallinn-Helsinki ship lane
  • modelling and measurement of currents
  • hydrometeorological operational information systems in harbours
  • oil spill models
  • analysis of environmental risks caused by wastewater
  • modelling and forecast of harmful algae
  • dynamics of redistribution of bottom sediments
  • sea and lake ice studies, forecast of ice conditions
  • modelling of wind waves off shore and in harbour areas
  • analysis of wake wash of high speed ferries
