Research work of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna is conducted within framework of the Program of the President of Turkmenistan «Basic Directions of Socioeconomic Conversions in Turkmenistan till 2010 and in Prospect». On the state scale the Institute co-ordinates fundamental researches and applications in the field of biological resources and environment protection. Scientific base of the Institute is constituted with 9 laboratories and one administrative and managerial group:
Laboratory of Monitoring of Desertification and Remote Methods. Chief of the Lab - Nepesov N.A., Candidate of Engineering Siences. Estimation of water, land, plant resources and their monitoring.
Laboratory of Forests and Pastures. Chief of lab - Durikov M., Candidate of Biology. Study of wild fruit-trees and elaboration of methods of their usage in a national economy.
Laboratory of Afforestation and Sands Binding. . Chief of lab - Agayev A.A., Candidate in Biology. Moving sands and ways of their binding and afforestation.
Laboratory of Higher Plants. Chief of lab - Kurbanov D.K., Doctor in Biology, professor. Wild useful plants of the Central Kopetdag.
Phytochemistry and Cytoecology Lab. Chief of lab - Yazkuliyev A.Y., Candidate of Biology. Nutritional and aromatic plants: chemical composition, immunity to high temperatures and their usage.
Laboratory of Lower Plants. Chief of lab - Stepanova A.A., Doctor of Biology. Usage of lower plants as nutritional resources regulating fish production of reservoirs.
Laboratory of the Vertebrate. Chief of lab - Saparmuradov D., Candidate of Biology. Investigation of fauna of the vertebrate resource kinds, their ecology, change of number and rational usage. Rare endangered species.
Laboratory of the Invertebrate. Chief of Lab - Kokanova E.O., Candidate in Biology. Theme: Harmful insects and ways of their number reducing. Mamedniyazov O., Doctor of Biology. Theme: Parasites and parasitical diseases of man, animal and plants.
Laboratory of Extra-Preserved Natural Territories. Chief of Lab - Meredov K.M., Candidate of Biology. Research of natural peculiarities of Turkmenistan reserves and study of question of their biodiversity preservation.
For today the Institute’s staff consists of 101 persons, from them 54 - research fellows, 28 - engineering personnel, 19 - maintenance staff. In total: Doctors of Sciences - 6, Candidates of Sciences - 34.At this stage the scientific forces and material resources of the Institute are mobilized for development and realization of such directions as:
Protection of environment and rational usage of natural resources.
Struggle against desertification and monitoring of an environment.
Recovery of forests and pastures.
Preservation of biodiversity.
Vermin and illnesses protection of plants, animals.
Parasitical illnesses protection of people.
Reserve (sanctuary) business.
