organisation profile
The Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology is an organisational unit of the Maritime Institute in Gdansk.
The following scientific tasks pertain to the laboratory activities:
- biological monitoring (chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos, phytobenthos, bacterial micro-flora) implemented within the scope of the Baltic Monitoring Programme (BMP-HELCOM);
- detection of multi-annual changes in the Baltic biocenosis with regard to the influence of environmental factors;
- development of protection and restoration systems of degraded marine coastal waters with regard to their present ecological status and the main degrading environmental factors;
- development of suitable biotechnical and sociotechnical methods in order to abate and eliminate effects of aquatic environment degradation;
- other activities relevant to problems of marine and inland water protection and restoration (expert appraisals, assessments and opinions);
- collection of data and data processing for the purposes of the research projects.
The data collected from 1992 exist as computer files, whereas the earlier data are mainly in the form of typescripts. The data concerning the HELCOM/ICES projects are freely available for the participating institutions or on request to HELCOM/ICES. In other cases, data availability is on the basis of special agreements between DAE IEP and the customer.
