The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) focuses on fundamental, strategic research into individual organisms, populations, ecological communities and ecosystems. The NIOO employs more than 200 staff at three different centres as well as its head office.

Research at the Centre for Estuarine and Marine Ecology (CEME) in Yerseke concentrates on ecosystems in brackish and salt water. It carries out research in estuaries and coastal waters in Europe, the east coast of Africa, south-east Asia and the Antarctic. Its research focuses on the role of biological processes in material cycles.
