organisation profile
The National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management (RIKZ) was founded in 1985 and originated from various Public Works Department organisations, combining a great deal of expertise on the marine environment. RIKZ's main research topics are:
- water management (the salt water ecosystem in its broadest sense);
- coastal management (development of the Dutch sandy coast);
- sea level rise (both observation and prediction, development of counter measures);
- North Sea (coordination between various institutes);
- Wadden Sea, Eems/Dollard area (sediment processes, tidal flat ecosystem);
- Zeeland Delta area (monitoring effects of the Delta works, monitoring the development of the delta front);
- sea bottom (inventory of pollution, finding maximum levels that can be allowed);
- technological innovations (development of new measuring instruments);
- information management/storage (main data centre for physical, chemical and biological data on the North Sea and coastal waters).
End of 2007 a major reorganisation took place in which RIKZ was split in 3 parts, that were integrated in 3 new organisations. The marine data monitoring and data management division, including marine databases, has been integrated into the new Rijkswaterstaat Data ICT Dienst. The marine environmental research and management divisionhas been integrated into the new Rijkswaterstaat Waterdienst, while the coastal engineering division has been integrated into the new Deltares institute.
