Geo-Ocean is a Joint Research Unit (UMR) with three main supervisory bodies: the CNRS, the University of Western Brittany (UBO), Ifremer, and a secondary supervisory body: the University of Southern Brittany (UBS). Partner organisations include the French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM) and France Énergies Marines (FEM).
The UMR Geo-Ocean is integrated into the European University Institute of the Sea (IUEM), a component of the UBO which has the status of Observatory of the Sciences of the Universe (OSU) of the National Institute of the Sciences of the Universe and the Environment (INSU).
Geo-Ocean is a multi-approach Joint Research Unit in marine geosciences. These approaches include geology, tectonics, geophysics, geochemistry, geotechnics, sedimentology, palaeontology, cartography and geomatics.
Geo-Ocean consists of 6 interconnected research teams:
- ALéas MArins team (ALMA)
- Team ANalyses, Remote Sensing, Instrumentation, Sampling, Observations and Data (ANTIPOD)
- Team Archives Sédimentaires TRansferts, paléo-Environnement (ASTRE)
- Team CYcles Biogéochimiques Et Ressources (CYBER)
- Team Geodynamics: Deep/Surface Interactions (GIPS)
- Team Observation and Dynamics of Coastal Systems (ODYSC)
