Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) is a Earth System research institution focusing on fundamental problems as well as applications and technologies that relate science with the main 21st century societal concerns: forecasting and adapting to climate change and to other major natural hazards, and establishing an environmentally sustainable supply of raw materials, water and energy. In the context of Marine Sciences, IDL conducts research on Marine Geophysics, Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography, Ocean Modeling and Ocean Climate at different time-scales.
IDL is based at the Faculty of Sciences but has research groups spread across several Portuguese Universities
