- The Centre d'Écologie Fonctionnelle et Évolutive (CEFE), located in Montpellier, was created in 1987 under the supervision of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the University of Montpellier (UM), the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), the Montpellier School of Agronomy (SupAgro) and the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE).
Headed by Richard Joffre (Director of Research at CNRS), the UMR comprises 350 people, including 100 doctoral and post-doctoral students, in fifteen teams divided into four departments: Evolutionary Ecology, Functional Ecology, Biodiversity & Conservation, Interactions between Ecology and Society, 3 cross-cutting themes (Agro-ecology and Participatory Sciences) and 3 shared technical platforms (Molecular Biology, Databases and GIS, Experimental Grounds). The research covers biodiversity dynamics, global change and sustainable development.
