Situated at the National Taiwan University main campus, the Institute of Oceanography was established in 1968. The Institute has endeavored to promote integrative and interdisciplinary research and education of marine sciences in Taiwan. The faculty and staff are committed to academic excellence and social responsibility by studying and protecting the marine environment, promoting the sustainable utilization of marine resources, and conserving marine ecosystems.
The Institute offers both M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The education is being conducted in four divisions: physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, marine geology and geophysics, marine biology and fisheries.
The Institute maintains a research vessel, the Ocean Researcher I. The vessel is equipped with advanced navigation equipment and research instruments. The operation is coordinated by experienced administrators, and is further supported by the crew, marine technicians and the vessel’s Regional Instrument Center.
