- The Regional Authority of Western Greece, as a second level public administration body, counts more than 800 employees, spread in 22 Directorates and 2 Development enterprises (which are legal entities under private law) and the Regional Development Fund with a special Department for the implementation of European projects and other networking activities. According to the Greek Law, it has the endogenous capacity to design, implement and monitor regional policies. Within this policy framework, it is able to effectively support, as well as to address, policy issues to general and special audience (citizens, chambers, universities, etc.). As a public authority, the Region of Western Greece has gained great experience in managing complex projects. One of its main priorities has been the protection and conservation of the environment in order to ensure a high level of quality of life in favour of its citizens and businesses. The Directory of Environment has high level skilled personnel for the monitoring and evaluation of all the crucial environmental factors. Not only the climatic change, but also the contamination of Region’s marine and coastal areas tend to become a serious threat for residential zones and some protected natural areas. Key economic activities, such as agriculture as also aquaculture as major productive sectors are already witnessing the results of the hazardous marine contamination. Therefore, besides the Directory of Environment, Directory of Agriculture and Directory of Development Planning are planning and implementing several environmental programs. The Region of Western Greece has participated in many EU projects related to the protection and restoration of its maritime and soil environment. Main thematic competences have been so far projects related to sustainable development, environmental protection, sustainable- ecotourism development, forest restoration, green products, wastewater management, irrigation, agroindustrial waste management.
