organisation profile

The Arctic Institute of North America is a federal corporation working in partnership with northern and Indigenous organizations, researchers, governmental and non-governmental institutions and all others interested in Arctic issues from across Canada and around the world. Their mandate is to advance the study of the North American and circumpolar Arctic through the natural and social sciences, the arts and humanities and to acquire, preserve and disseminate information on physical, environmental and social conditions in the North. They strive to meet that mandate through diverse multi- and interdisciplinary research activities, by providing infrastructure in support of research and education at their Kluane Lake Research Station in Yukon, and through data and publication services, including the interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed research journal Arctic, published continuously since 1948.

History

AINA was founded in 1944 and chartered in December 1945 by an Act of Parliament. The HQ was in Montréal (McGill University), with offices in New York (NY, USA), Washington (DC, USA), Baltimore (MD, USA) and Ottawa (ON, Canada) gradually created. The headquarters moved to the University of Calgary in 1976 and in 1979 the Institute became part of the University of Calgary as a university research institute.
