organisation profile

The Danish Coastal Authority (DCA) is an organisation under the Ministry of Transport. It was originally established in 1973 as a reorganisation of the former Royal Danish Department of Maritime Works, and on 1 January 2001 it was reorganised into a directorate but the name remains the DCA.

As a result of the structural changes we took over new tasks from the former government harbour administrations.
The DCA attends to the public's interests in harbour constructions, coastal protection and constructions in waters under Danish sovereignty. As far as these matters are concerned we are the only Danish public authority that provides an advisory service to the Minister of Transport.
We attach great importance to performing our tasks in accordance with a vision which includes the following objectives:

- In accordance with the requirements of the times and as judged most appropriate, the Coastal Authority will - with special focus on the West Coast and the Wadden Sea - further develop the comprehensive natural perspective which is an integral feature of our work and through our initiatives in the harbour field we will create the functionality which will ensure space and security for other harbour players.

- Through continuous monitoring, research and development initiatives, the DCA will improve the basis for provision of an advisory service to the Minister and set the agenda for coastal initiatives.

- Coastal protection and harbour tasks will be solved at a competent technical level in collaboration with public authorities, harbour boards and the private sector.

- Our administrative foresight will form the basis for administration of coastal legislation, the sovereignty over Danish waters and harbour environment together with the wide administrative area otherwise covering these fields.

- The DCA will protect and maintain the infrastructure relating to the harbours, coasts, dikes and navigation channels. An up-to-date coastal view aims towards efficient coastal protection and simultaneous safeguarding of a comprehensive coast aesthetic view.

- The DCA wants to be a modern public organisation which through its staff and pay policy is able to keep and attract competent, committed and loyal managers and employees who endeavour to make the DCA a good and attractive place to work.
Our head office is situated in Lemvig and has approx. 65 staff. A total of approx. 110 employees are working at stations in Thyboroen, Ferring, Blaavand and Roemoe, at harbours in Helsingoer and Thorsminde, at the lock at Hvide Sande, in the measuring section and in the National Dredging Section called the STU.
