organisation profile
The Earth Sciences Department offers courses in geology, geographic information systems, geography, environmental science, ocean science and sustainability. It houses a number of research laboratories, some of which operate as regional facilities and are also used by researchers outside the department. Most of these labs are also used for honours and graduate student teaching and thesis research.
The Department is located on the University's primary campus, called Studley Campus.
History
The Department of Earth Sciences was founded in the early 1990s from the former Department of Geology, whose origins are with the Geology program established in 1879 in the then-new Department of Science.
Dalhousie University has been continously in operation since 1863. From 1863 to 1996 it was known as The Governors of Dalhousie College and University. In 1997 it merged with the Technical University of Nova Scotia (formerly the Nova Scotia Technical College) and became Dalhousie University.
