The Department of Biology offers courses that emphasize the structure and function of organisms, from molecules to ecosystems. Undergraduate and Graduate programs are available in Microbiology, Animal and Plant Physiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Marine and Freshwater Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Sciences.
The University is home to a Marine Ecology Lab, which carries out research on coastal marine ecology mainly on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia and regularly monitors in-situ intertidal temperature and several ecological variables.
History
The university was founded in 1853 as Arichat College, in Arichat (NS). It moved to its present location in Antigonish in 1855 and became St. Francis Xavier College, then St. Francis Xavier University in 1866.
