organisation profile

The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) is Canada's national wildlife agency. Its core area of responsibility is the protection and management of migratory birds and their nationally important habitats. Other areas of responsibility include species at risk, research on nationally important wildlife issues, control of international and interprovincial trade in endangered species and the negotiation and domestic implementation of international wildlife related treaties and agreements. CWS is responsible for Canada's National Wildlife Areas and Migratory Birds Sanctuaries which are federally protected areas.

Wildlife management in Canada is constitutionally a shared responsibility among the federal and provincial / territorial and aboriginal governments. CWS works closely with these governments on a wide variety of wildlife issues. The Service engages in cooperative management projects with a number of international and domestic non government agencies and funds a significant number of management and research or monitoring initiatives.

The Service has 5 regional offices through Canada (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and Nothern Region, Pacific and Yukon Region) and staff in all provinces and territories except Prince Edward Island.

The Atlantic office is a partner of the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre, established in 1997 also in Sackville NB.

History

The service was established in 1947 as the Dominion Wildlife Service under the Department of Resources and Development. The Sackville office was present from the start, but there was another office in St. John's NL which covered some of the responsibility area covered today by the Sackville office.

By 1950 it was renamed the Canadian Wildlife Service. The Department of Resources and Development  became the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources in 1953. The Service then became part of the newly formed Department of Forestry in 1960, and of subsequent departments in which the latter evolved (Forestry and Rural Development, Fisheries and Forestry), up to and including the Department of the Environment (Environment Canada) established in 1973.

Structurally, CWS is now a directorate in Environment Canada's Environmental Stewardship Branch.
