- Rio Tinto Alcan is the world's largest producer of bauxite, alumina and aluminium. They are one of five product groups operated by Rio Tinto, a leading international mining group. Rio Tinto's aluminium business started with Comalco in Australia in the mid 1950s. Rio Tinto bought Comalco in 2000, and the company was renamed Rio Tinto Aluminium in late 2006. In October 2007, leading mining organisation Rio Tinto acquired Alcan, which orginated in Canada in 1902. Alcan integrated with Rio Tinto's existing aluminium business, resulting in Rio Tinto Alcan. Operations in Australia can be found in: Tasmania, Queensland, Nothern Territory and New South Wales.
