The main task of the Sea Fisheries Department is to provide the scientific basis for:
. the rational and sustainable exploitation/management of living marine resources, from a biological, technical and socio-economic point of view;
. the protection of the marine environment as a habitat for these resources; and
. the quality control and assurance of fishery products.Geographically speaking, the Department's research activities are primarily focused on the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, the Irish Sea and the Bay of Biscay.
