From 1972 to 1979, the MIC conducted 5 joint research oceanographic campaigns with the Centre national français pour l'exploitation des océans and the Institut scientifique et technique des pêches maritimes (both of which merged in 1984 to create Ifremer).
History
The unit responsible for maritimes fisheries management within the Government of Québec was created in 1922 under the Ministère de la Colonisation, des Mines et des Pêcheries.
In 1942 this function was transferred to the new Ministère des Pêcheries Maritimes, and included among other activities the compiling and publishing of fisheries statistics. Research activities began in the 1950s at three stations located in the Québec maritimes regions with the acquisition of the Station de Biologie Marine (Grande-Rivière, previously owned by Université Laval) and the establishment of two more research stations in the Basse Côte-Nord and Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
The mandate for maritimes fisheries management and research was transferred to the Ministère de l'Industrie et du Commerce in 1963. Research activities were centralized in Québec City in 1969.
In 1979 responsibility for maritimes fisheries were transferred to the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation, while the MIC acquired new responsibilities and changed names.
