- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established on November 12, 2008. Government of Montenegro has adopted the Rulebook on internal organization and systematization of the Environmental Protection Agency, whereby it began operation formally and legally on March 1, 2009. Internal organizational units of EPA are the following:
- Sector for nature protection, monitoring, analysis and reporting;
- Sector for the issue of permits;
- Sector for communication and information system management;
- Arhus centre;
- Department of legal and financial affairs.
Agency is responsible for Preparation of environmental monitoring programmes, Activities related to the systemic measuring , testing and evaluation of indicators of the state of the environment and environmental pollution, Analysis of information based on environmental monitoring, Preparation of reports on the state of the environment, Prepration of environmental protection plans and programmes, EIA (Environmental impact assessment of projects), SEA (Strategic environmental assessment of plans and programmes), permits for non-hazardous waste import and transit and hazardous waste export, permits for import, transit and export of substances that deplete the ozone layer, as well as of products with such content, IPPC permits (integrated pollution prevention and control), CITES permits (trade in protected plant and animal species), permits for trade in ionizing radiation sources, permits for trade in chemicals and Issues permits for collection, use, and trade in species of wild flora and fauna and fungi, Develops and implements educational programs to raise awareness about environmental protection and establishes and maintains the information system for environmental protection.
