The German Institute of Navigation (DGON) is a non profit making organisation of public interest. The institute was founded in 1951. Its main objectives are:

  • Assistance of scientific activities related to navigation and position finding,
  • Support of research & development activities,
  • Provision of opportunities to present and introduce new applications in the field of navigation, localisation and positioning, in order to advance and to offer practicable contributions for improving safety and economy of maritime, air, land, space and inland waterway traffic and adherent means of communication, including telematic, radar, transponder, gyro and robotic engineering.
It sets up committees on various subjects related to navigation systems, such as:
  • The Maritime Traffic and Navigation Commission
  • The Air Traffic and General Aviation Navigation Commission
  • The Terrestrial Traffic and Land Vehicle Navigation Commission
  • The Radar Technology Commission
  • The Gyro Technology Commission
  • The Satellite Navigation Commission
  • The Traffic Telematic Technology Commission
