- The Laboratory of Hygiene monitors the quality of drinking,
surface (wells, rivers, lakes), ground and sea water of northern Greece on an
annual basis. Examination concerns both microbiological and chemical
parameters.
There are 1325 cities and villages in the northern Greece, which submit water
samples to the Laboratory of Hygiene, for examination. Moreover, nearly 160
coastal bathing areas are examined for the presence of indicator micro-
organisms regularly from May to October, every fortnight.
Oyster culture water samples, as well as seabed samples, are also sent for
assessing their quality.
