The Center for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW) is a cooperation between the University of Hamburg and the Max Planck Society which has the goal of promoting excellent science in the fields of marine, climate and earth system research in Hamburg. Since July of 2005 the Institute of Coastal Research of the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht has been an associated member of the ZMAW.
The institutes of the University of Hamburg participating in the ZMAW are organized in the Centre for Marine and Climate Research, which has the status of a Research Focus and its own charter.
The Max Planck Society is represented in the ZMAW by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.
The Institute of Coastal Research and the North German Climate Office (Norddeutsches Klimabüro) of the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht participate in the ZMAW.
