The Institut of Earth Physics of Strasbourg (IPGS) is a joint research unit (UMR 7516) of the University of Strasbourg and the CNRS, associated with the École et observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (EOST), whose object of study is the Earth. The research themes in Marine Sciences and Technology focus on the mechanisms of oceanization: lithospheric extension, the role of fluids and the initiation of magmatism in the creation of a new oceanic ridge.(UMR 7516) is a laboratory which has developed a wide variety of scientific topics in earth science. These concern not only the founding geophysics disciplines such as seismology, magnetism and geodesy, but also disciplines such as tectonics and geophysics of near-surface corresponding to a changing research landscape towards the Geosciences surface and the environment. The staff of the IGPS are organized into four research teams: Seismology, Dynamic Global: potential fields and deformations active, Dynamics of the lithosphere and sedimentary basins, Experimental Geophysics. Part of the research conducted within the UMR 7516 is based on the geophysical observatories EOST (seismology, magnetism, gravity and geodesy) and scientific services (Renassance, BCSF, RLBM), which can lead to an efficient coupling between observations and research.
