The Environmental Pollution Control Laboratory belongs to the Chemistry Department of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki. Its areas of speciality/activities are analytical methodology, nutrients, heavy metals, organics (halogenated hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, etc.), sediments, waters, suspended matter. In addition, it provides assistance to the appropriate governmental bodies, in establishing quality standards for waters disposed into the Thermaikos Gulf and other developed areas of marine resources. Geographic area of its interest is the coastal zone (particularly estuaries) of the north Aegean Sea, although scientific research is also carried out in lakes and rivers.
The LEPC/AUTH has been involved in several research projects, the most recent of which is related with the eutrophication modelling of Thermaikos Gulf. As an academic institution the LEPC/AUTH has a very important graduate and postgraduate teaching activity and also training programmes which include course work and research, leading to a Ph.D. degree in water pollution control.
