DEP, the Public Petroleum Corporation was founded in 1975 as the Greek National Oil Company for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation. In 1996, this task was transferred to its affiliate upstream company, DEP-EKY in 1998 merged to Hellenic Petroleum S.A as the Exploration and Exploitation of Hydrocarbons Division. Hellenic Petroleum is trying to enhance exploration activities in Greece by forming joint-ventures with International Oil Companies. It is also making a great effort in order to increase its in place reserves, by acquiring exploration acreage and producing fields overseas.
