Respect for the environment and adapting to new regulations are among EDF's key commitments, which factor in a number of parameters. First of all there is the thorny question of the scarcity of water in the not too distant future, as well as the problem of apportioning it between different uses. Moreover, we must be able to analyse the environmental impacts of the Group's facilities, and evaluate and control them in a precise and credible manner.
EDF intends to play a major role in the field of renewable energy. Marine turbines generate electric energy using the tidal currents, which show a promising potential of several thousand Mega Watts in European waters. The centre's efforts in this area involve sharing the data gathered on prototypes tested by EDF's UK subsidiary EDF Energy, monitoring technological developments, identifying and characterising potential sites, and evaluating the impact of the technologies on the marine environment (partnership with IFREMER and other partnership with the University of Edinburg).
