The X-Ray Laboratory is well equipped and organized. The general goal of the Laboratory is to conduct high level basic and applied research in selected ares of Materials Science and the establishment of the required infrastructure for a close connection of the laboratory with industry. The accomplishment of these objectives is pursued with three main activities:
(a) The preparation, characterization and study of the physical properties of new materials which will contribute to the development of high technology products and devices by the Greek industry.
(b) The establishment of analytical techniques and methods of materials control in order to provide expert technical service and technology transfer to Greek enterprises in the public and private sectors, and
(c) The training of young scientists and technicians through a programme of graduate studies and participation in the research activities of the laboratory.
Within the framework of its activities the X-Ray laboratory has been involved in several marine research projects carrying out analyses of samples for determining the major and trace elements in marine and river sediments, using X-ray fluorescence and diffraction techniques.
