The scientific activities of the Radioanalytical Laboratory involve, amongst the others, the development of special methods of neutron activation analysis (NAA), which enables the determination of trace amounts of elements in different media. Application of NAA has been made to studies of pollution by toxic and other trace elements of lakes, of the Saronikos Gulf and other Greek coastal areas, which are contaminated by sewage, industrial and agricultural pollutants. In addition, research and application of NAA has been made for the investigation of medical, geological, and archaeological problems, such as disease diagnosis through trace element content, and assessment of the provenance and genuineness of archaeological treasures on the concentrations of trace elements.
