The Physical Oceanographic Department of the Institute of Oceanography at the National Centre for Marine Research conducts research studies in the area of east Mediterranean Sea, with particular emphasis in the near-shore and offshore waters of the Aegean, Ionian and Levantine Seas. The studies mainly carried out by the Department aim at obtaining the ultimate knowledge of the phenomenology of the area, e.g., general and mesoscale circulation, water mass structure, dispersion processes, upwelling, fronts, etc., in relation to the driving mechanisms.
The Department is equipped with advanced technology instruments which enable its involvement in large scale national and international marine research projects. The Department of Physical Oceanography collects large amounts of physical oceanographic data (due to the large number of national and international research projects in which it participates) and it is involved in data exchange, particularly within the frame of international organizations.
