History

In 1949, the Memorial University College (est. 1925, located on Parade Street in St. John's) was elevated to university status as Memorial University of Newfoundland. It moved to Elizabeth Avenue (current main campus location) in 1961. The College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics opened on its campus in 1964, then moved out to Ridge Road (~3 km away) in 1985 and became the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology. While remaining at this location, it became afiliated with the University in 1992 and took its current name: the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
