The Environmental Pollution Control Project (EPCP), established in 1974, was initially supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of the project was to determine the pollution levels of bathing sea water in Greece and furthermore to define the requirements for the rational design of a new liquid waste disposal system for the greater area of Athens. EPCP/ATH operates as a governmental department, participating in programmes of UNEP, WHO and other United Nations Agencies. Within the framework of its activities, EPCP/ATH has undertaken the following responsibilities:
(a) Development of a national environmental information system;
(b) Development of a project for atmosphere pollution control;
(c) Development of a project for sea water pollution control;
(d) Development of a project for waste disposal;
(e) Development of a project for noise reduction, and
(f) Determination of an environmental protection strategy.
Amongst the activities of the EPCP/ATH are also included the organization of conferences, workshops, exhibitions and training courses for Greek and foreign scientists.
