The Marine Geology and Physical Oceanography Laboratory was established in 1989 within the Geology Department of Patras University. The Laboratory is at present by far the largest teaching and research University center in its field in Greece. The two main aims of the Laboratory are:

To carry out fundamental research in the fields of Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography and Marine Pollution.
