organisation profile

Urban Hydrology and Hydraulics - River Catchment Modelling (dr. Patrick Willems, ir. Raf Bouteligier)
The urban Hydrology and Hydraulics Research Group covers all aspects of the water cycle in the urban environment : rainfall analysis, rainfall runoff, design and modelling of drainage and sewer systems, source control measures, combined sewer overflow emissions, overflow structures, sediment and pollutant transport modelling and calibration of measurement equipment.
The River Catchment Modelling Research Group covers the rainfall runoff on catchment scale including : rainfall analysis, conceptual rainfall runoff modelling, hydrodynamic river modelling, flood modelling and water quality modelling. Much emphasis is put on an integrated modelling approach as well for quantitative modelling as for immission modelling.

Coastal and Estuarine Hydraulics (prof. Jaak Monbaliu)
The main topics of the research include : time series analysis of individual waves, numerical modelling of wave propagation in the coastal zone (spectral appraoch), the interaction of waves and currents, the transport of non-cohesive and cohesive sediments due to the action of currents and waves, and remote sensing of suspended sediments.

Sediment Mechanics (prof. Erik Toorman)
The Sediment Mechanics Research Group studies the behaviour and fate of non-cohesive sediments (sand) and cohesive sediments (mud) in coastal areas, estuaries, rivers, reservoirs and sewer systems. The major research activities are related to a better theoretical understanding of the processes and to the numerical modelling of sediment-laden turbulent flow under currents and wave action. Also experimental laboratory studies and field measurements are carried out.
