organisation profile

DLD, the Defence Laboratories, is an organization of the Belgian MOD, that has built up a high egree of expertise in the areas of CBRN, petroleum products and textile. The core-mission f DLD is giving technical and scientific support to the military operations of BMOD, as well broad as on Belgian territory. This support can be direct on site or by remote contact or indirect y contributing to the life cycle support of the material resources used in those operations r the support of them. The operations of BMOD categorized as “aid to the nation” resulted n the need of the creation of the Federal Orientation Laboratory (FOL) under the responsibility of DLD. This laboratory is recognized as an indispensable asset in the reaction of the Belgian ublic authorities to a terroristic or hostile act or threat on Belgian territory using chemical, biological or radiological agents or a mix of them or in combination with explosive devices or substances.

Five other laboratories within DLD are active in the CBRN area including the Laboratory for Detection, Sampling and Sample Preparation (DSS). All aspects of CBRN are covered technically and scientifically, going from risk analysis, detection, sampling over identification and quantification of agents to protection and decontamination techniques.

As the name already indicates, three major tasks are confided to the DSS laboratory:

THE FIRST TASK CONTAINS THE DETECTION, which aims to develop an expertise in the field of chemical detection, and this in the context of CBRN Defense and the protection of the personnel. To do this, the personnel of the laboratory studies past and future technologies in order to be able to answer, to the best of its ability, the questions of its different clients. In the context of detection, the laboratory also studies the feasibility of setting up a gas generator designed to test the different military detectors.

SAMPLING IS THE OBJECTIVE OF THE SECOND TASK. The aim is to develop a sampling expertise for CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) and TIM (Toxic Industrial Material) agents. Sampling is a very critical capability because it is the gateway towards all risk evaluations and because the analysis results of the CBRN and TIM agents will depend on it.

THIRDLY, THE LABORATORY DEALS WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE SAMPLES in view of the chemical analysis. This task is performed for the benefit of and in close cooperation with the Laboratory for Chemical Analysis (CA).
