organisation profile
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology is an internationally renownedinstitute for climate research. The institute is located in the universitydistrict of Hamburg, within walking distance of Hamburg´s city center.
The MPI-M and six institutions from the university’sgeosciences department represent the Centre for Marine and AtmosphericResearch ZMAW.The major objective of its 130 scientists, post docs and PhD studentsis to understand how physical, chemical and biological processes, aswell as human behaviour contribute to the dynamics of the Earth system, and specifically how they relate to global and regional climatechanges. MPI-M develops modelsand measurement techniques to analyze the natural variability in theatmosphere, the ocean and the biosphere, and to assess how the systemis affected by changes in land-use, industrial development, urbanization, and other human-induced perturbations. Advanced numericalEarth system models are used to simulate the behaviour of theatmosphere, the ocean, the cryosphere and the biosphere, and theinteraction between these different components of the Earth´s system.
