- The Marine Biology Laboratory of Trieste is managed by a consortium consisting of the Municipality of Trieste, the Province of Trieste, the University of Trieste and the University of Udine. The scientific management is carried out by a Scientific Committee.whose members also include the Director of the laboratory, Prof. Serena Fonda Umani. The technical and scientific staff consists of 35 persons.The Marine Biology Laboratory research activities regard mostly biological oceanography, marine biogeochemistry and physical oceanography, as well as services aiming to evaluate the environmental impact of human activity.Since the early 1970's the Marine Biology Laboratory has investigated the causes of marine environment degradation in the Adriatic Sea, and for more than a decade monitored the Gulf of Trieste for various environmental parameters.The Marine Biology Laboratory carries out instructional activities, and provide logistic and educational support to various qualification teachings in the environmental field. Every year, it prints the journal Nova Thalassia, concerning various researches in the Adriatic and in other Italian areas. These publications contain many data reports about benthic and planktonic organisms and about the biogeochemical conditions in the Northern Adriatic Sea.
