organisation profile

Established in 1929, the Istituto Universitario Navale (IUN) is the only Italian university where a complete course of study in physical oceanography and meteorology can be carried out. In the framework of such an Institution, the Istituto of Meteorologia e Oceanografia (IMO=Institute of Meteorology and Oceanography) deals with both teaching and research activities in the above disciplines. The IMO-IUN has been dealing with hydrographic and marine current surveys of the Italian seas, as well as with studies of the Pacific Sector of the Southern Ocean (Ross Sea). Research activities include also numerical modelling and theoretical studies in different branches of geophysical fluid dynamics. Observed data have not yet been organized in a comprehensive database: they are rather grouped according to areas of investigation and/or cruise year. There is no established data exchange routine between the IMO-IUN and other scientific institutions, unless in case of cooperation on specific projects. The School of Nautical Sciences, of which IMO is a part, yearly issues its 'Annali' (Annals), on which IMO's activities are thoroughly reported.
