organisation profile
The Institute of Zoology has a strong research and teaching program, comprising all aspects of zoology ranging from molecular biology to ecology.
The Institute of Zoology consists of six divisions that offer a broad expertise in diverse areas of zoology, with a focus on evolutionary biology and ecology.
The Zoological Museum Hamburg (ZMH) is one of the most important natural-history-research museums in Germany. The ZMH has earned its high national and international reputation owing to its collection and research output. The collection as the heart of the museum includes approximately 10 million zoological objects and therefore forms the fourth largest of its kind in Germany. The collection constitutes the main basis for efficient research performed by the staff of the ZMH at the University of Hamburg. Here the ZMH and the Zoological Institute cooperate in research and teaching very closely with each other.
