The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is the world's largest private, nonprofit ocean research, engineering and education organization. WHOI has approximately 750 full-time scientists, support staff and students. WHOI is dedicated to research and education to advance understanding of the ocean and its interaction with the Earth system, and to communicating this understanding for the benefit of society. The Institution’s main research vessels are Atlantis, Knorr, Oceanus, and Tioga. WHOI also builds and operates a group of vehicles designed for ocean exploration.
