- The Research Hydro-mete¬oro¬lo¬gical Institute ((from 1963 – Transcaucasian ) which founded in 1953, was charged with the stu¬dy of hydro-meteorological regime of the territories of Georgia, Ar¬menia, Azerbaijan and Dagestan, as well as with scientific and me¬tho¬dological supervision of hydro-meteorological network loca¬ted there. From 2005 the Georgian Institute of Hydrometeorology represents the Legal Entity of Public Low. The main directions of the scientific research of the Institute of Hydrometeorology are: Development of short- and long-range methods for forecasting of meteorological, hydrological and agro-meteorological processes; Working out of methods for forecasting dangerous and disastrous hydro-meteorological phenomena (mud-streams, snow avalanches, floods, high winds squalls, hail, heavy rainfall. etc.);Elaboration of scientific and methodological basis for the creation of radar and satellite system to monitor fields of cloudiness and precipitation, now casting of dangerous and disastrous hydro-meteorological phenomena; Estimation of climatic, agricultural climatic and renewable energy resources (water, wind, solar radiation);Development of methods for the estimation of possible climate changes and their impact on different branches of economy; Analysis of the impact of hydro-meteorological factors and human activities on natural environment and climate, development of recommendations for mitigating harmful consequences of natural environment modification; Investigation, estimation and forecasting of pollution level and ecological state of the environment (atmosphere, soil, water) aiming the protection and rational use of natural resources as well as the creation of ecological monitoring system; According to the above listed directions, at present, the Institute has 4 scientific departments: weather forecasts, modeling of natural and technogenic disastrous, water resources and hydrological forecasts, climatology and agro-meteorology and monitoring and forecasts of pollution of the environment. In recent years, the Institute took part in preparing of the First and Second National Communication of Georgia to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. They actively cooperate with a scientific block of NATO on the investigation of the Black Sea contamination, the United Nations Fund on wild nature protection, International Service of Glacier Monitoring, etc.
