Institute of Geodesy was established by resolution of Scientific Council of Vilnius Technical University on January 29, 1992. Activities of Institute of Geodesy are mostly related to establishment of National Geodetic Reference and solution of related scientific problems. Such activities are coordinated by National Land Board at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Lithuanian National GPS Networks have been established by the Institute of Geodesy in cooperation with other organisations and taking part in programs coordinated by International Association of Geodesy, Nordic Geodetic Commission and other international organisations.

Wide scope of aerophotogrammetric cartographic activities were performed at the Laboratory of Digital Aerophotogrammetry of Institute of Geodesy in solution of actual problems of digital photogrammetry.

At present Institute is involved in research of Lithuanian territory geodynamics, gravitation, magnetic field and geoid determination. Institute takes part in establishment of Lithuanian National Geodetic Vertical and Gravimetric Networks, creation of Vilnius City digital map, works on Geodetic Reference Information System, investigates Earth’s crust vertical movements at the geodynamic polygon of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
